KUALA LUMPUR: Export opportunities exist for Malaysian porcelain tableware in Brazil given its expected import demand increase by between 10 per cent and 15 per cent, said the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade).

In a statement, Matrade said Brazil, a big market for porcelain tableware, would be importing a lot of the product to support the country’s major upcoming international events in the near future.

Matrade Trade Commissioner in Brazil, Yusram Yusup said large hypermarket MAKRO Sao Paulo, also planned to expand its sourcing activities to include Malaysian suppliers with the capacity to produce various porcelain tableware for distribution in all of its Latin American stores.

“Malaysian manufacturers in porcelain tableware with export capacity are encouraged to contact the Matrade Sao Paulo office for more details and trade advice,” he added.

The market is expected to increase further next year, especially with the growing hospitality industry, including hotels, restaurants, convention centre, and food retailers.

Presently there are more than 9,560 hotels and lodgings in Brazil.

Matrade said Brazil imported approximately US$70 million or 10 per cent of its porcelain tableware, while over 500 domestic manufacturers form the major manufacturers and suppliers for the market.

Due to the robust demand for the product, sales of domestic products increased by about 50 per cent last year, while imports grew by four per cent compared with 2010, with China, Portugal, Hong Kong, France and Italy as its main sources of imports. — Bernama
