ALOR SETAR: A Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) lecturer won a suit at the Alor Setar High Court here Wednesday, to be promoted to senior lecturer, which was denied by the university four years ago.

Judicial Commissioner, Mohd Zaki Abdul Wahab also ordered UUM to pay the plaintiff, Dr Abdul Halim Mohamed, 46, the arrears in salary owing to him at four percent interest per annum from June 2008.

The cost was to be borne by the defendants former UUM Vice-chancellor, Tan Sri Dr Nordin Kardi and UUM, he added.

Abdul Halim, a lecturer at the university’s School of Education and Modern Languages Centre, filed the suit on April 11 2010 seeking a declaration that he had held the post of senior lecturer since June 2008 and was automatically entitled to the position of associate professor as well.

He claimed arrears in salary, RM500,000 in exemplary damages, repayment of RM200,000 in tuition fees and damages for stress.– BERNAMA
