Other opposition parties ‘badmouthing’ STAR – Jeffrey

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah STAR chief Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan has threatened to sue those spreading rumours about the party being sponsored by Barisan Nasional (BN) or Umno.

The party will take these people to court, Jeffrey warned when officiating at Sabah STAR Wiranita (Women) Convention here yesterday.

To be sponsored by BN is akin to the party saying “here take this knife and kill me with it… isn’t that stupid?” he said.

“We are here to topple BN/Umno, so it does not make sense that Sabah STAR is sponsored by the coalition.

“I am therefore requesting Sabah STAR members, should you hear of any such talk, to jot down the name of the person saying that, the date, time and place so that we can sue the individual in court,” he said.

Jeffrey said he believes the rumours are the work or strategy of other opposition parties who feel that Sabah STAR is a force to be reckoned with.

“These parties are scared that their members will join Sabah STAR which is going from strength to strength and gathering force as time passes,” he said, adding, “this shows that Sabah STAR is strong and they are scared of the party.

“It also reflects their desperation because when an individual starts to badmouth a friend, it shows that the person either has a problem or is desperate. In this case, it is the opposition parties that are desperate to reduce the support and influence of Sabah STAR,” he said.

Speaking to reporters later, Jeffrey said the talk of Sabah STAR being BN/Umno-sponsored party have been circulating in coffee shops throughout the state.

He said that among the allegations thrown at Sabah STAR is that the party has been paid RM100 million by BN/Umno.

“Another claim is that Sabah STAR was paid RM20 billion, RM1 billion for each of the 20 Points,” he said.

Jeffrey also allayed the worries of Sabah STAR members over the eligibility of the party to contest in the 13th general election, assuring them that party leaders have checked with all the relevant authorities including the Election Commission and it has been confirmed that the party can contest in the election.
