ROBBED: The young woman being treated at the hospital.

KUCHING: A young woman was left with a deep gash on her palm when she deflected a blow from a machete-wielding robber at the car porch of her house in Kenyalang Park.

The incident happened around 11.30pm on Wednesday when the victim, 20, found herself face-to-face with an unknown man moments after returning home and parking her vehicle.

The robber was said to have climbed over the automatic front gate and rushed toward the woman before swinging a machete at her, forcing her to deflect the blade with her right palm.

He then grabbed her handbag containing a purse and personal items, and promptly disappeared on foot.

Her parents, who were asleep at the time, told reporters they woke up upon hearing their eldest child screaming in pain and banging the locked front door.

“My wife and I rushed downstairs and were shocked to see her bleeding heavily from the palm of her hand. She then told us what had happened and we rushed her to the Sarawak General Hospital,” said the father.

According to him, his daughter had claimed the assailant — described as being in his late 20s — was the same person who had attempted to break into his house a few days earlier via a window on the upper floor.

“At that time, my daughter spotted the man before he could do anything and he fled. She told me that person was the same man who robbed her,” he added.

A police report of the incident has been lodged.

In a separate case, a cafe worker sustained a minor gash on her forehead when she fell victim to snatch thieves while walking to work yesterday.

The 25-year-old, who stays with her elder brother in Bormill Estate, said the incident happened around 11.30am while she was making the 300 metre-walk to her workplace at a commercial centre.

She said two men on a motorcycle grabbed her handbag containing RM300 and personal documents as they rode past her from behind, causing her to fall down on the road.

The victim, who sought treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital following the incident, went on to claim that four of her co-workers had also fallen victim to snatch thieves in the same area this year.
