KUCHING: Youths can play a vital role in nation-building and strengthening democracy in the country, said Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth secretary-general Wilfred Yap.

Yap, who has been selected by the party to contest in the Stampin parliamentary constituency, said youths need to properly understand their roles so that they can improve their contributions and participation in political parties or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in future.

He said this during a recent seminar entitled ‘Politics and Civil Society. The Role of Youth and Student Leaders’, where he was a panellist along with Medicci Lineil from the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs and Arip Amera from Angkatan Belia Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

The seminar was organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Alumni Network (FAN) Malaysia, which promotes liberal values in its training and dialogue programmes in Germany and abroad.

It is non-political and aims to educate the younger generation on nation-building, civil society and
strengthening democratic practices in Malaysia.

Yap added that the seminar enabled him to engage and share his opinions with youth leaders aged between 18 and 28.
