KUALA LUMPUR: Police are not discounting the possibility that five suspects, including one who was shot at a road block at Water Front City Ampang on Thursday, are linked to the car theft syndicate known as the ‘Mamak Gang’.

Selangor police chief Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said the suspects, aged between 23 and 48, had previous criminal records and several car number plates were found in a Mercedes-Benz they were driving, which was reported stolen in Petaling, in 2009.

“They have previous records such as car theft, burglary and armed robbery, and the same modus operandi as the Mamak Gang. And the Mercedes-Benz they were driving was reported stolen in Petaling, in 2009,” he said at a press conference, here yesterday.

A sword, walkie talkie and hand cuffs were also seized from the car and two houses in Kelana Jaya and Setapak, he added.

“We also found a Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) corporate shirt and urge anyone who has been the victim of a man wearing such a shirt in a group of four or five to contact the police,” he said.

In the 11.20am incident on Thursday, the five men, three of whom later tested positive for drugs, evaded a road block and sped off in the direction of Taman Mega, Ampang.

A traffic policeman gave chase on a motorbike and managed to corner them about 4 kilometres away at a dead end but the driver of the Mercedes-Benz turned around and nearly crashed into him while attempting to getaway.

The traffic cop then shot at them twice in self-defence, with one shot hitting the left shoulder of the driver.

The men were nabbed after their car tyre got caught in a small drain by the roadside. — Bernama
