KUALA LUMPUR: Thirteen of 75 vagrants picked up today in an operation by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and several enforcement agencies tested positive for drugs, operations chief Superintendant Mohd Hisham Izhar said.

He said 57 Malaysians and 18 foreign nationals, aged 20 to 50, were held in the operation which ended at 3am.

The vagrants who tested positive for drugs were male Malaysians and all of them were handed over to the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK).

“One of the other vagrants was handed to the Welfare Services Department, four to the Immigration Department and 57 were released,” he said when contacted.

He said the operation was aimed at getting rid of the increasing number of vagrants, drug addicts and beggars in the city.

The operation was conducted by 78 officers from DBKL, AADK, the Immigration Department, the National Registration Department, the Welfare Department and Alam Flora Solid Waste Management Company, he said.

A vagrant, Ahmad Mahidir, 49, from Kuala Lipis, Pahang, said he had to live on the streets as he could not find a job.

Another, identified only as Rosnah, 51, denied that she was a vagrant and that she was waiting for her adopted son when nabbed sleeping on cardboard on the five-foot way along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. — Bernama
