SIBU: The people of Sarawak has high hopes that the state U-16 volleyball teams would achieve an impressive performance in the 13th National Volleyball Championship, slated to be held in Alor Star from Dec 11-14.

Sarawak Volleyball Association president Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming believed the state teams had the pedigree, the reputation and the strength to bring back both titles.

“We are the reigning volleyball powerhouse and nobody can derail our ambitious plan and our hope to retain our supremacy,” he added after handing over the flag to the state team recently.

Among those at the event included Sibu Volleyball Association chairman Dr William Ting Wei and state volleyball chief coach Moh Ung Min.

Sarawak failed to bring back the titles last year and was second best in both categories but Lau reminded the players to forget about that misfortune.

‘Always look forward with a bright perspective and with a positive mind. Think big, dream bold and we are confident that you will be able to make it this time,” he said.

Lau said the people of Sarawak would be waiting for the teams to bring back the good news.

“Gather your courage and play to your maximum ability. Never give up and victory is always within reach.”

Ting, in his brief remarks, also reminded the players to rise up when it matters most.

“Work together and provide each other with all the necessary support and encouragement. Team spirit is important and once unity prevail, it will be easier to bring back both titles,” he said.

Earlier, Moh said the players were already fully prepared and were raring to go for the final showdown after months of intensive and laborious training at the Sibu Volleyball Court here.

“We are not taking anything for granted and our only mission is to bring back both titles,” he added.

Moh said most of the players in the current squad had a rich vein of experience as they had represented the state in the recent Pahang Sukma championship.

“More than half from the Girl’s and Boy’s teams had featured prominently in the recent Pahang Sukma. We therefore have a bright chance to clinch both titles,” he said.

Nine states are taking part in both categories.

Sarawak is grouped with Johor, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur and Pahang in the boy’s section. The other four states are Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Perak and Kedah.

For the Girl’s section, Sarawak will cross swords with Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang and Selangor. The other group comprised Johor, Kedah, Penang and Negri Sembilan.
