BARITO: The floods that hit North Barito district in Central Kalimantan since Dec 3 have inundated 8,872 homes in between two and four metres of water.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said the floods hit six sub-districts in North Barito damaging 2,753 hectares of padi fields.

Buildings affected include 11 schools, four community health centres, five mosques, seven surau, a church and 25 bridges, BNPB said on Sunday.

North Barito District had declared a state of emergency from Dec 8 to Dec 28 but did not say the number of people displaced by the floods.

BPBD has opened a disaster operation and coordination centre and general kitchen to help the flood victims.

The aid team comprising the police, the military, Health Department, Public Works Department and Indonesian Red Cross Society have sent rice and food via district offices, private companies and community leaders.

The Central Kalimantan provincial government provided kitchen appliances, clothing, fastfood, mosquito nets, blankets, tents, mats and mattresses.– Bernama
