TUTONG: Heavy thunder showers wreaked havoc on several rural Tutong areas over the weekend with Mukim Kiudang and Mukim Lamunin bearing most of the brunt, Borneo Bulletin reported.

Starting Saturday afternoon right up until midnight, flashfloods were reported in several Mukim Kiudang villages, namely Bakiau, Kebia, Kiudang, Mungkom and Padnunok.

Sections of Mungkom road, Padnunok road and the main Lamunin road were inundated, and dozens were affected, including a hardware store and a workshop.

As of yesterday morning, the water had not receded along several roads and houses in Mukim Kiudang, while the water level at Simut River and Kiudang River was still high.

A Padnunok villager said, “An hour after the heavy rainfall which started around 4pm, we noticed water overflowing from the main river bank. On seeing this unusual situation, my neighbour and I quickly moved our vehicles to higher grounds from the house compound to the roadside.”

He also described the flooding as being the worst since they had moved to the village.

Meanwhile, a worker at a Padnunok hardware store said, “The flood water rose rapidly as the rain continued. We could see the workshop workers next door rushing to move vehicles from the workshop to the main road. Some of the cars could not be moved because the water rose very fast.

“Likewise, some of our hardware stock were damaged by the debris brought in by the river water,” he added.

Some residents attributed the flooding to the rise in earth works in the Padnunok and Lamunin areas, with mud from the site clogging the main drains.

Meanwhile, landslides were also reported along Jalan Lamunin hillsides. At Simpang 1329, a team of firefighters from the Lamunin Fire Station was called in to assist residents affected by the major landslide at a nearby hill.
