Similajau set to host Nature Challenge 2012

KUCHING: The Ministry of Social Development in collaboration with Sarawak Forestry Corporation, Bintulu Resident and District Office, and the Sarawak Triathlon Association will organise the Sarawak Similajau Nature Challenge 2012 this coming Saturday.

Similajau National Park in Bintulu had been chosen as the venue of the event for its uniqueness and challenging geography.

According to the organisers, the Sarawak Similajau Nature Challenge is considered as one of the toughest sporting adventure events in the state where participants will be competing against their own endurance.

“The race will cover two disciplines, road cycling (10km) and jungle trekking. The event will give local participants a chance to compete with experienced and world class international contestants.

“It is also aimed to promote Similajau National Park as the tourist destination through sports,” said a spokesman of the organising committee.

The endurance challenge is a team event, which is divided into two categories, Kenyalang Open and Similajau Closed.

“The Kenyalang Open category is open to both Malaysians and foreigners. It consist of two persons per team, and each team will race in a 45km course, which consist of beach running (5km), road cycling (20km) and jungle trekking (20km). As for the Similajau Closed category, the race is only open to Sarawakians.

“Each participating team must have two members. Team members can either be a pair of male and female or mixed gender,” the spokesperson revealed.

Entry fee of RM50 will be charged for the Kenyalang Open and RM30 for Similajau Closed. Winners will get cash prizes, medals and certificates.

Bintulu Resident Muhamad Yakup Kari is expected to flag-off the race while Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing is scheduled to give away the prizes.
