KUCHING: Arts students will not be left behind in the job market despite the preference for technicians and skilled workers to help in developing Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

There will be ample job opportunities for Arts students too, says Unimas’ vice-chancellor Datuk Prof Khairuddin Abd Hamid. He is optimistic that SCORE will offer vast opportunities for all levels of the workforce.

“They may be Arts students but they have been taught technology and management subjects too apart from Arts-related subjects. They are well-versed on technical terms,” he said.

“This (their knowledge) will provide them with the chance to actually participate in the various fields, including technical field, later,” he said.

He added that when one talked about SCORE, it’s not only about technical development and technology but also aspects on creativity.

“Creative art is useful for promoting, training and stimulation activities. For example a lot of visuals could be used in training purposes. They (Arts students are very good at it,” he told reporters after opening an exhibition on creative artworks showcase (eCITRA) 2012 for the benefit of about 30 lecturers from the Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts.

Khairuddin commended the faculty as being one of the most active faculties at the university. It had organised many programmes to directly and indirectly promote the university.

“eCITRA 2012, jointly organised with Petronas Sarawak, is a flagship event for the lecturers and students. The lecturers have their expertise and talents which they share with their students as well as helping the university to promote the faculty through their programmes and activities,” he said.

On completion of their studies, they would be ready to face the working world, he added.

Also present at the function were the faculty dean Asso Prof Hasnizam Abdul Wahid and Petronas manager (stakeholder relations) Nor Azam Abang Zawawie.
