SIBU: Sarawak Road Transport Department (RTD) is still awaiting further instructions from its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on the implementation of Automated Enforcement System (AES) in the state.

Sarawak RTD senior assistant director Kuek Jui Hock said the headquarters was now concentrating on implementing the new system in Peninsular Malaysia.

“But I can assure that before the system is implemented in the state, there will be a series of briefings and introduction on it.

“We will not install cameras without briefings and introduction first,” he told a press conference after officiating at the opening of Ngu Chung Beng & Sons Sdn Bhd Driving Institute in Mile 8, Tunku Abdul Rahman Road here yesterday.

The institute is owned by Ngu Brothers Motors Group of Companies.

Kuek added that all stakeholders would be informed before the AES is implemented in the state.

“Until AES issue can be toned down, maybe we will be hearing on AES coming to Sarawak in the future. From time to time, we will consult our headquarters,” he said.

On Sunday, RTD director-general Datuk Solah Mat Hassan said the department would proceed with its decision to install AES at 831 locations nationwide before next year, for the safety of road users.

He said although the move was opposed by various quarters, even becoming politicised, the department was adamant in implementing the system which was currently used in several developed countries.

“We will not postpone our plan to implement the AES because it is a noble effort and in no way, a punishment to motorists,” he said as reported by Bernama in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu.

Solah said currently 14 AES units had been installed, with seven in Perak, two in Selangor and five in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, apart from four mobile AES units.

Since its implementation on Sept 23, he said the rate of traffic offences at various strategic locations had been reduced by 75 per cent.
