Former customs directors charged with falsifying document

KUALA LUMPUR: A former Customs senior assistant director pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here yesterday to a charge of deceiving a Customs officer with a falsified document for the acquisition of digital cameras.

Zameri Ibrahim, 53, allegedly deceived Putrajaya Customs procument management senior assistant director Mohd Shafie Yaacob into approving the falsified document dated July 25 2006.

The document apparently listed the supply of 40 units of SLR digital cameras costing RM9,000 each, amounting to a total of RM360,000 from Central Management Catalogue Agency Sdn Bhd.

However, the actual models supplied were Sony DSC-H5 at RM6,000 per unit totalling RM240,000.

Meanwhile, another former senior assistant director of the department, Abdul Razak Md Ali also pleaded not guilty to conspiring with Zameri on the same charge.

Both the accused, from the Putrajaya Royal Malaysia Customs, support services and marine branch, allegedly committed the offence at the prevention division, on Sept 11, 2006.

They face up to 20 years in prison and fine of not less than five times the amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction under Section 11(C) of the Anti Corruption Act 1997.

Judge Ahmad Zamzani Mohd Zain set bail at RM15,000 with one surety each and fixed Jan 14 for case management.

Deputy public prosecutor Nor Afifah Yusof conducted the prosecution, while lawyers Nik Muammer Hurrie and Zamani Dol Mat appeared for Zameri and Abdul Razak respectively. — Bernama
