Contingent win four gold, a silver and six bronze medals on first day

VIENTIANE: The Malaysian contingent picked up four gold, a silver and six bronze medals on the first day of the Asean University Games (AUG).

Karate contributed three gold and three bronze medals with Chun Jin Wee (women’s individual Kata), setting the tone for others while men’s Kata trio Kam Kah Sam, Lim Chee Wei and Wong Keng Yinn added the second before L. Kunasilan made it three by winning the men’s 55kg Kumite.

Leong Mun Yee added the fourth by winning the women’s individual 1m Springboard while teammate Cheong Jun Hoong contributed a silver.

The three bronze medals from karate came through Lim Chee Wei (men’s individual Kata), Arni Nurfatin Arpa (Kumite 68kg) and Nur Eleena Anis Abdul Malek (Kumite 50 kg).

The taekwondo squad contributed three bronze medals through the mixed Poomsae, Poomsae men’s team and women’s Poomsae individual.

Malaysia are expected to add to the gold medal tally when the women’s 10m Platform, men’s 1m Springboard and karate events continue tomorrow.

Meanwhile, at the National Sports Complex Stadium, Malaysia beat Singapore 1-0 in a Group B match to keep their hopes alive after losing 0-2 to Laos on Tuesday.— Bernama
