KUCHING: The Sarawak Branch of the Department of Veterans Affairs of the Malaysian Armed Forces will strive to achieve its target of repairing 50 veterans’ houses in the state next year.

The department’s director Lt Kol Monday Juhid said although the department was understaffed it would not be used an excuse for them not to achieve the target.

“We have to work extra hard to deliver whatever task given to us and we are confident we could deliver them in time,” he said in his short speech at the handing over of duties for three of the department’s staff members who will either retire from the service or will be transferred to other departments at a ceremony held yesterday.

Monday disclosed that the department is also employing two temporary daily paid staff to assist in processing the one-off contribution from the government to army veterans.

He said the payment would be made next year.

Meanwhile, Captain Farizal Hassim will resume the duty as the new assistant director of the Sarawak Branch of the Department of Veterans Affairs of the Malaysian Armed Forces.

He is taking over from Captain Zainal Abdidin Kamaruddin who will retire from the service at the end of this month.

Two other staff of the department, administrative officer Michelle Tumpok Beti and driver Ismail Joni will be transferred to the other department effective early next year.

Nursabrina Natasha Abdullah, a Royal Navy officer will resume the duty as the administrative officer at the department.

The handing over of duties was witnessed by Monday and the Sarawak branch Malaysian Armed Forces Veteran Association advisor Major (rtd) Peter Runin.

Monday thanked and praised the outgoing staff for their commitment while serving the department and hoped their successors will also give their fullest commitment.

He also urged the veterans to contribute to the association.
