Sunway College student crowns badminton champion

KUCHING: Sunway College student here Andy Ng Aik Tshong did his college proud when he emerged as the champion for the men’s single badminton competition at the state-level Private Institution of Higher Education Sports Council (Masiswa) Sports Games 2012 here recently.

The second-year ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) – Skill Level student defeated Elvin Choo Ching Yun of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak in the finals to clinch himself the coveted trophy of the annual sports carnival.

“I’m very happy to be able to win the title for Sunway College Kuching and also become the first champion in the men’s single category, which is held for the first time at the games this year,” an elated Ng, 19, told The Borneo Post when met here yesterday.

As the competition’s top seed, the former student of SMK Kuching High received a bye in the first round before defeating Abner Zechariah of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak.

In the semi-final, Ng, who is also a state player for badminton as well as a coach and sparring partner for the Sarawak Badminton Association, trounced Muhammad Shairazi from Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (Unitar).

In recognition for his success, Sunway College Kuching chief executive officer Joseph Lim was on hand to present Ng with a special prize comprising 25 per cent rebate of his ACCA – Skill Level tuition fees.

“Ng has no doubt made Sunway proud and we would like to congratulate him for a job well done,” Lim said.

“At Sunway, we constantly encourage our students to participate in extra-curricular activities. Sporting events such as the Masiswa games provide a wonderful opportunity for our students to invigorate their body and mind.

“We hope that his win would encourage other students at Sunway to participate in future games and look forward to participate in more competitions including ‘friendlies’ with other higher learning institutions,” he said adding that he hoped the lad would be a good mentor to his peers.

All in all, Sunway College Kuching was represented by nine students who participated in two events at the games namely badminton and bowling.
