Defending champs gain unassailable lead with 90 gold

KUCHING: The dynamic duo of national junior exponents Clement Thian Fung Seng and Elvic Bong Qian Zheng powered defending champions Kuching to 90 gold, 36 silver, 18 bronze medals and 11 fourth placings on the first day of the 22nd Sarawak Wushu Championship yesterday.

This placed them on top the medals table far ahead of second placed Miri who won seven golds, 10 silvers and five bronzes while Sibu are third with three golds, 14 silvers and 10 bronzes.

In fourth place were Sarikei with two golds and two silvers.

Elvic, a transition student from SMK Kuching High, bagged six golds and one silver while his schoolmate and teammate Clement also captured six golds.

Elvic’s golds were from group, duilian, Group D elementary changquan, Group B standardised routine changquan where he scored the highest points of 9.34 in the tournament, Group B standardised taijiquan 24-style, Group A standardised routine changquan and the silver was won in the Group D elementary nanquan.

On the other hand, Clement won the golds in group, duilian, Group D foundation nanquan, Group D elementary nanquan, kungfu shan, Group B standardised routine nanquan and had to skip the Group A standardised routine changquan after sustaining a heel injury on his right foot.

Pint-sized Bong Yun Pin, 10, was also impressive with his haul of six golds in Group C junior changquan, Group E foundation changquan, group (primary school), kungfu shan, double section staff and Group C junior nanquan.

In the girls section, state exponents also had a golden day, with 10-year-old Fu Wen Jie from SJK Chung Hua No. 4 bagging golds in Group C junior changquan, Group C junior jianshu, Group C junior qiangshu, Jacelyn Chia winning the golds in group, Group D elementary nanquan,Group D elementary changquan and Group B standardised routine nanquan.

Felicia Ma Hui Qi enjoyed a golden day where she won in the group (secondary school), kungfu shan, double section staff, Group C junior nanquan apart from picking up silvers in Group C changquan and Group E foundation taijiquan 8-style.

A total of 46 events were competed yesterday and today 62 events will be competed.

More than 160 exponents aged from five to 18 representing Kuching, Sibu, Sarikei and Miri are competing in the championship which ends today.
