KOTA KINABALU: It is not wrong to ask for the Tuaran parliamentary seat but it clearly belongs to Upko, said Sulaman assemblyman Datuk Hajiji Noor.

He was commenting on the statement made by PBS Tuaran Division vice chief I, Stephen Ebon Sayah, who suggested that the Tuaran parliamentary seat currently allocated to UPKO be given to PBS.

“The Tuaran parliamentary seat currently belongs to Upko. So we have to be practical. Barisan Nasional (BN) is all about sharing power. We must respect that and we help each other without looking at the party.

“Seat allocation will be decided by the central leadership, so nothing is wrong with asking, but seat demands should not be brought up to the media because we have proper channels to talk about it,” he said.

Hajiji stressed that BN has introduced the 1Malaysia system, which allows leaders to give an example of living in unity without looking at any differences. He said this should be practised by leaders to reflect the true spirit of friendship in BN component parties.

“It is our responsibility as a part of BN to work together and support the political parties from the coalition to ensure victory in the coming general election,” he added.

Hajiji said this to reporters after launching the Family Day celebration of the Local Government and Housing Ministry at Likas Bay.

Speaking at a meet-the-people session at Kampung Bintangor Sungai Damit, Tuaran after the event, he said, the Prime Minister and BN chairman, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, deserved to be given a chance to continue leading the government and country after winning the next general election.

Hajiji, who is Sabah BN and Umno treasurer, stated that Malaysians must remember that Najib only took over from his predecessor Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi about a year after the last general election of March 2008.

“Although Najib has done a wonderful job in the last three and a half years, he needs a fresh mandate of his own to carry on the good work.

“Not just an ordinary mandate, not just simple majority, but Malaysians should give him a two-thirds majority so he can bring this beloved nation of ours to greater heights and, more importantly, achieve the aims of Vision 2020 which is only eight years away,” he added.

At the function, several former opposition grassroots leaders from the area joined BN through Umno. They handed over their membership application forms to Hajiji who is also Tuaran Umno division chief.
