20 motorcyclists, 10 motorists detained in midnight operation

KOTA KINABALU: Twenty motorcyclists and ten motorists were detained on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol during an operation by the police and Road Transport Department (RTD) yesterday.

Five of them were brought back to the police station for further investigation.

The joint operation was conducted on the main road adjacent to Api-Api Centre from midnight to 3.30am.

In the three-hour operation, police detained 20 motorcyclists with five of them in their 20s, whom they believed were ‘Mat Rempits’. Two motorcyclists were also arrested for forcefully breaking the police barriers at the road block.

Acting city police chief Superintendent M Chandra said 75 summonses were issued by the police, while RTD issued 40 summonses to motorists and vehicle drivers for violation of the road transport regulations.

He urged road users to abide by the regulations to avoid action being taken by the police or RTD.

Chandra said the police would be conducting similar spot check from time to time to reduce traffic accident in the city.
