Miri wushu exponents shine at KL championship

GOOD OUTING: Wushu exponents from Miri shows their medals.

MIRI: Miri Wushu Association (MWA) took home eight golds, five silvers and two bronzes at the recent 2012 Kuala Lumpur Wushu Championship (Dance Flying) in Kuala Lumpur.

Phang Yii Fei captured the Most Outstanding Athlete award in the tournament and brought back four gold and two silver medals. His first two golds came from freestyle event, Dao Shu and Gun Shu, while in the changquan event, he took his first silver.

Earlier, Phang earned a silver in the compulsory changquan event and two other golds from the compulsory Dao Shu and Gun Shu.

Meanwhile, Tiong Ying Sing won three golds in the compulsory nanquan, nan dao and nan gun event while the youngest participant from MWA, Chien Ching Kiong took back a gold in the 24-style taichi guan event.  John Yu Zhi Xiang won two silvers in the compulsory event dao shu and gun shu while Law Yee Xuan won a silver in the youth nan quan event and Alexander Liew Juinn Kai won a bronze in the compulsory jian shu event.

Phang Yii Gin also won a bronze in the compulsory gun shu event.

The competition was held on  Dec 14 at SJK Nan Kai Kuala Lumpur and was jointly organised by Kuala Lumpur Wushu Association and Rong Sheng Wushu Academy.

MWA chief coach, Master Tiong Ching Chiong said he was proud of the team’s overall performance in Kuala Lumpur.

“This is our first time participating in such a big scale event outside Sarawak with more than 180 athletes from eight states taking part,” he told The Borneo Post in an exclusive phone interview yesterday. He added that the team will perform even better in the future after being exposed to series of tournaments before this.

“At the same time, we will be upgrading our current facilities at our training centre so that our athletes can be trained well in a better environment,” Tiong added.
