MP questions police discretion in speeding summonses

TAWAU: Kalabakan MP Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh has questioned the police discretion in issuing summonses to motorists allegedly caught speeding in undesignated speed limit areas.

Ghapur called on the police not to compound motorists at their whims and fancies for speeding, particularly along roads with no speed limit sign.

He said the action implied that the government was trying to make money from the people, especially road users.

“In addition to receiving complaints, I personally saw a policeman hiding under a tree to catch motorists speeding, for example in Apas and Kuhara Road.

“But the question is, how do motorists know the speed limit when the sign is not available in the area? It is as if motorists are being persecuted,” he said yesterday.

According to Ghapur, the motorists will be compounded RM150 and the high rate has frustrated, angered and confused many road users, especially when they suddenly received a summons.

He stressed that he is not against the authorities carrying out their duties in enforcing road regulations, but the action must be fair and not burden the people.
