KUALA LUMPUR: Compounds totalling more than RM27,774 were issued on 244 individuals including 98 foreign tourists for smoking in prohibited areas at the KL International Airport (KLIA) and the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) recently.

Selangor Health director Datuk Dr Azman Abu Bakar said each offender was compounded a minimum of RM250.

If they failed to settle the compound within the time stipulated, they would be charged in court under the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 and liable to a fine of not more than RM10,000 or a jail term of up to two years upon conviction.

“The KLIA Health Office receives many complaints about members of the public smoking in prohibited areas in the KLIA and LCCT.

“As a result, the operations to enforce the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 had been carried out for two days beginning Dec 16 with the collaboration of Malaysia Airports Berhad,” he said in a statement yesterday. — Bernama
