Eight foreigners charged with gang robbery against tanker

KOTA TINGGI: Eight Indonesian men were charged in the magistrates’ court here yesterday to committing gang robbery with dangerous weapons against a tanker in the waters of Malaysia two weeks ago.

Dane, 23; Hasbullah, 35; Ricky, 37; Trim, 36; Jais, 46; Arjadi, 32; Amie, 37; and Zul, 34, along with two others still at large, were charged with committing the offence against MT Merlion Dua about 3.2 nautical miles off Tanjung Stapa, Pengerang, here at about 2.30 am on Dec 11.

They nodded to indicate they understood the charge against them and Magistrate Nor Shahid Abd Malik set Friday for mention of the case in the Sessions Court here.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Juanita Mohd Said of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) appeared for the prosecution. The Indonesians were not represented.

They were charged under Section 395, read together with Section 397, of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years and whipping upon conviction. — Bernama
