Student activist’s appeal for stay of sentence granted

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here yesterday granted student activist Umar Mohammad Azmi’s appeal for a stay of his sentence after spending a weekend in the Kajang Prison.

Kuala Lumpur High Court judge Amelia Tee Hong Geak Abdullah when granting the stay pending an appeal however, imposed several conditions for his bail, which was increased from RM1,000 to RM5,000.

Umar, 23, was on Friday sentenced to a month’s jail and fined RM1,000 by the Kuala Lumpur magistrate’s court for obstructing Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) officer from carrying out his duties during a raid on student protesters occupying Dataran Merdeka in April this year.

Among the conditions set by Amelia Tee was that Umar should not be involved in any similar offence.

Umar was on Friday sentenced to a month’s jail and fined RM1,000 by the Kuala Lumpur magistrate’s court for obstructing DBKL officer Mohd Masran Mamat, 34, from carrying out his duties during a raid.

On April 23, 2013 Umar was accused of committing the offence at Dataran Merdeka, Jalan Raja here at 8.05am, a day

earlier.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor P. Viknesvaran while Shahredzan Johan represented the accused. — Bernama
