Youth jailed for stealing from mini market

TAWAU: A 19-year-old youth was sentenced to seven months’ jail by a Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for theft.

Magistrate Suhaila Selag meted out the sentence on Supardi bin Dahlan who pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code which provides imprisonment for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.

Suhaila also ordered the accused to serve the sentence from the date of arrest.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Jefri Othman told the court that the accused stole three bottles of Tiger Beer, a bottle of Guinness Stout, six boxes of Choki-Choki chocolate, three boxes of Cadbury chocolate and a box of Clout 9 chocolate all worth RM100 at 899 Mini Market, Taman Bintang, Mile 3, Apas Road about 7.30pm on Dec 22 this year.

The accused with another friend still at large, went to the mini market with intention to steal. His friend pretended to buy toothpaste while the accused took the opportunity to steal.

His action was seen from a round mirror mounted at the corner of the shop and when he exited without paying, a shop assistant sought help and coincidently a policeman who was in front of the shop, detained the accused. His friend fled.
