KUCHING: Home-grown Malaysian retailer Metrojaya is confident that it will capture the market in the cat city as it received its first customers here at CityONE Megamall after its soft-opening yesterday.

Metrojaya senior operations manager, Putri Thuraiya Megat Mohd Nor said during event that the first Metrojaya departmental store in Kuching and eighth throughout Malaysia, was ready to conduct its business activities starting yesterday.

“There is a lot of potential in Kuching for us to expand into this market.

We conducted feasibility studies and based on the population density in this area as well as the purchasing power, we are very positive about the market here,” she said.

Metrojaya has 36 years of successful retailing experience behind it and believed that it was well-poised to spread its influence to Sarawak.

In keeping with its mission, Metrojaya is set to offer its vision of quality lifestyle shopping to the people of Sarawak.

The departmental store will occupy three stories with a wide assortment of choices and brands, including Metrojaya-exclusive brands unavailable elsewhere.

“Along with well-known international brands such as Laura Ashley, Metrojaya will also be introducing our established and successful fashion brands like Somerset Bay, East India Company, Passages, Emmanuelle, Cape Cod, Zona and our home specialty known as ‘Living Quarters’ to the Kuching crowd.

“These brands are only available here.

“In our Living Quarters, we also carry the products from famed international chef, Jamie Oliver’s brand of the same name,” Putri enthused.

When asked of her views on the competition in Kuching, the senior manager pointed out that the key attraction for Metrojaya was the exclusivity of the products and brands within the departmental store.

Shoppers who had interest in these brands would have a reason to visit Metrojaya.

Putri said that CityONE was set to be Kuching’s premier shopping destination with its strategic location in the suburban area, at the intersection between Jalan Song and Jalan Tun Jugah.

The mall is surrounded by many residential areas within the vicinity, thereby ensuring a steady flow of shoppers.

She pointed out that the facilities within the mall were ready, including car parks and ventilation, so customers can shop comfortably.

This newly-opened Metrojaya is also the largest in East Malaysia, according to Putri, who also pointed out that the usage of chandeliers, high ceilings and wider walkways were a new concept which was kick started for the first time in Kuching.

This was to bring convenience to the shoppers and provide a comfortable ambiance to the store.

“We are confident that there will be customers patronising our store and that we will be able to serve them well here so that they no longer have to travel to the Peninsular to shop.

“This is the best time to open, with the year-end shopping in full force and the Chinese New Year holidays right ahead.

“I believe this is a good opportunity for us to tap on as the buying power is at its highest during this time,” she added.

She also revealed that there would be a plethora of events and special discounts in conjunction with the soft opening.

“We have a lot of things in store which will catch Kuching people by surprise,” Putri said.
