MPK Belimbing holds one-day fishing festival

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN:The Kampong Belimbing Village Consultative Council (MPK Belimbing) yesterday morning held a fishing festival as part of a communal activity drive, especially during the school holiday, Borneo Bulletin reported.

Some 53 locals participated in the one-day fishing festival meant for the residents of Kampong Belimbing, Subok.

Prior to the competition, participants held a mass surah al-fatihah recital and a thanksgiving prayer.

The competition began at 8.30am at the Tasik Sarubing Recreational Park in Kampong Belimbing.

The guest of honour who officiated the commencement of the festival was the Administrative Officer at the Brunei-Muara District Office, Awang Mohammad Edi Fadle bin Samsu.

The competition was divided into three categories – ‘Heaviest Fish’, ‘Fastest Catch’ and ‘Most Fish’ caught. Fish caught during the competition had to weigh more than 300 grammes.

A resident and senior citizen of Kampong Belimbing, Hajah Hasnah binti Yaruddin, 70, told the Bulletin that she began participating in fishing competitions three years ago.

“This is just part of my hobby because I am very passionate about fishing. I have never won anything so far, but that will not stop me from doing what f love.

“Winning or losing is a different thing. It’s a matter of satisfaction to be able to do what I love even though I have aged.”

At the end of the festival; prizes consisting of electrical goods were presented to winners of the three categories by the guest of honour.
