KAPIT: Ninety-five per cent of Class F Bumiputera contractors here are doing well with their own projects being delivered on time.

Sarawak Bumiputera Chamber of Entrepreneurs (DUBS) Kapit branch chairman Bangsa Untang said only 5 per cent of Class F contractors here are running their businesses ‘Ali Baba-style’, where they do not actually carry out the work.

“Those who receive contract work and pass it on to others aren’t friendly with us. They belittle themselves,” he said during the DUBS New Year dinner.

Bangsa said the tender board should review the existing system so certain projects could be given to Class F contractors without tender.

He also advised contractors to ensure they are ready to take on new projects.

“I was told that in 2013 a lot of projects are coming in. Apart from PIA-PIAS (rural basic infrastructure projects) etc from the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development, the new RM1 million project Sejahtera Kampung allows each district to recommend three kampungs. With many projects in the pipeline, are you ready?” he asked.

He pointed out that Class F Bumiputera contractors are key players.

“Do your contract work properly. If you have any problems, don’t feel shy to ask others who are more successful. Solve it, do it properly and don’t delay the project.

“As a contractor, contract work means income. Be broad in your approach, if others can do, we can do it. If the Chinese can do it, why can’t we? We must learn from the Chinese success story. Every one of us, we can do it with determination and will. The key is to be realistic and practical, start with small projects to gain experience and working capital for bigger projects,” he said.

Bangsa called on contractors to work closely with their elected representatives and to go to the District Officer or Resident for advice.

He also praised Mara for supporting Bumiputera contractors and giving them opportunities to venture into business and for providing training.
