Jailed for attempting to steal from ATM

KUCHING: A 38-year-old driver was yesterday sentenced to six months’ jail for attempting to steal money from an automated teller machine (ATM) at Maybank MJC Batu Kawa in December last year.

Magistrate Maris Agan sentenced Lanti Gighip, a father of three from Lundu who committed the offence at 8pm on Dec 26, 2012.

According to brief facts of the case, Lanti attempted to steal money from the ATM at MayBank MJC Batu Kawa
after getting hold of a bag containing
15 chains of keys for ATMs.

He was caught by two safeguards who rushed to the premise after being informed by a technician that the accused was trying to steal money from the machine.

They later contacted the police who arrested the accused at 8.45pm that day.

In mitigation, Lanti pleaded  for leniency as he was a first time offender.

He said his wife is a housewife and they have three children. He works as a driver with a monthly salary of
RM800.

Before passing sentence, Maris Agan said he considered public interest, nature of the offence, mitigation plea and that it was his first offence.
