ONE OF ITS KIND: An artist’s impression of Get & J Collections.

KUCHING: The perfect interior design happens when form follows function.

When you sell one-of-a-kind hand painted batik, what you need is a shop that is specifically designed to show off these works of art that can be appreciated as a huge quilt or by itself.

Get & J Collections at Plaza Merdeka’s third floor reflects this concept, thanks to interior design company Fern Enterprise.

Fern Enterprise managing director Gwendeline Hu said at the store yesterday they worked closely with the store owners to create the best fit for their products.

“This is what we call an art gallery shop, designed to display works of art,” she told thesundaypost.

Green textured walls became the backdrop for dazzling batik pieces from Malaysia’s East Coast, which hung on stainless steel frames. The frames make it easy for the owners to decide how much of the individual pieces they want to show.

The store was also furnished with recycled and refurbished bamboo furniture. Hu said their sister company In Style, which specialises in indoor and outdoor furniture and decorative items like paintings, brings in these items from Thailand regularly.

Much of the available space on the walls was accentuated by paintings from Thai artists.

Norizan Ali Hassan, one of the store owners, said they carry batik that is meant for making ‘baju kurung’ for special occasions. They also have less flashy versions meant for formal batik shirts.

Get & J Collections began as a home business and this is their first store.
