BALIKPAPAN, East Kalimantan: An environmentalist has accused state-owned port operator Pelindo of destroying a mangrove swamp in Balikpapan Bay to develop a container terminal, Jakarta Globe reported.

Stanislav Lhota, a researcher from the Czech-based University of South Bohemia, said on Monday that Pelindo had already cleared and filled in five hectares of the bay, three of which included a mangrove conservation area.

“The development is still continuing and the scale of the destruction will be far bigger,” he warned.
