Man claims trial to robbery

KUCHING: An unemployed man charged with robbery claimed trial in the Sessions Court here yesterday.

Mohamad Iswandy Jemat, 26, from Kampung Astana pleaded not guilty to robbing a 19-year-old woman of her handbag containing a MyKad, a handphone and makeup kit at Lorong Pak Ghani off Jalan Haji Hashim at about 10.30pm on Dec 26 last year.

Mohamad Iswandy will be tried under Section 392 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum penalty of 14 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.

The young woman was walking home from Kampung Lintang when halfway she was confronted by a man armed with a knife.

He asked her to surrender her handbag before stabbing her on the abdomen, pulled her hair, punched her head and abdomen, and kicked her.

He grabbed her mobile phone, took out the Sim card and threw it away.

Following the report made by the woman, police located him at his house at Jalan Astana. During the arrest, they discovered the woman’s mobile phone.

Yesterday, Judge Alwi Abdul Hamid fixed Feb 8 this year for the pretrial case management while the hearing will be on April 18 this year.

Iswandy was released on RM10,000 bail in two sureties pending the hearing.

Inspector Yunus Sahak prosecuted.
