LABUAN: An Indian national was arrested by the police at Labuan Airport on Wednesday for trying to smuggle 4,686.59 grams of drug worth nearly one million ringgit into the island.

Labuan Customs Department director Wasimin Daiman yesterday said that the customs personnel went to the airport after receiving a tip-off and detained the 52-year-old man at 11.55am.

“The suspect tried to bring in Methamphetamine from India after his transit at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KKIA).

“After checking the suspect’s luggage, we found all the drugs were hidden inside six picture frames.

“Based on our initial investigation, the suspect had been to Sabah 10 times from 2011 to 2012 by using tourist visa,” he said, adding that the value of all the confiscated drugs was RM890,452.10.

Wasimin said the suspect, who was dressed like a professional when he was arrested, was remanded for a week for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952. If found guilty he would be hanged to death.

This was the first major drug seizure in Labuan this year and Wasimin asked the public to continue to provide information of any drug activity here by contacting the enforcement unit at toll free number, 1-800-88-8855.
