KUCHING: Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) are optimistic that 2013 will be a memorable year as the association celebrate their 50th anniversary.

Speaking to The Borneo Post during a press conference yesterday, SLTA president Dato Patrick Liew said that the association has come a long way since its formation in 1963.

“Although this year is a special one for us, we must not lose our focus. We still have a lot of work waiting for us and it is always our main focus to develop tennis and sports as a whole here in Sarawak,” he added.

Thanking all those involved in the development of tennis in Sarawak, Liew also revealed what is in store for Sarawak tennis in 2013.

“I am also happy to announce that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) head office in London have declared March 4 as World Tennis Day,” said Liew.

In conjunction with that special day, SLTA will launch a Junior Development Programme Campaign with LEA Sports Centre.

Hoping to groom more young tennis talents in the state, Liew is hopeful that the programme will get positive response from the public.

“We are targeting the schools and parents to encourage youngsters to register themselves for the programme. I hope they don’t miss this golden opportunity as we have experienced professionals conducting the programme,” he commented.

The association’s first tournament for this year will be the 2013 edition of the Chief Minister’s Cup scheduled on March 13.
