Vietnam to send 90,000 workers abroad

HANOI: Vietnam plans to send 90,000 people to work in foreign countries and territories in 2013 mainly to South Korea, Malaysia, Russia and China’s Taiwan, the Vietnamese Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) said yesterday.

Vietnam sent 80,000 workers overseas last year, with 70 per cent to countries such as Japan, South Korea, China’s Taiwan and Malaysia, Xinhua news agency reported.

However, since August 2012, the government had tightened recruitment for Vietnamese workers due to a large number of illegal workers who overstayed in their host country.

To resolve the problem, MOLISA now requires workers to place a deposit at home before leaving for any country.

With this move, the ministry hopes to send between 12,000 and 15,000 workers to South Korea in 2013. — Bernama
