KUANTAN: The police have arrested three suspected human traffickers and rescued 15 Indonesian women who were confined at a shophouse in Jalan Beserah here.

The rescue of the foreigners yesterday followed a police report lodged by five of their compatriots who managed to escape from the shophouse, with the help of the public.

The suspects, comprising two men and a woman in their 30’s, were also nabbed during the rescue operation about 4.30pm, on the same day.

Kuantan police chief ACP Mohd Jasmani Yusoff said the 20 Indonesian women, aged between 20 and 30, were believed to have been confined in the shophouse for several days.

He said five of the women escaped from the premises on Wednesday, and lodged a police report about 4.30pm.

“Based on the report, the police raided the shophouse and detained the remaining 15 women,” he told Bernama here yesterday.

Mohd Jasmani said initial police investigations indicated the foreigners were promised well-paying jobs before they were confined at the shophouse.

“We have sent the Indonesian women who entered the country using social visit pass, to a women’s protection centre in Kuala Lumpur,” he said. — Bernama
