Don’t give opposition a chance – Yahya

PUTATAN: The people here have been urged to support Barisan Nasional (BN) and not give the opposition a chance during the next general election.

Deputy Cheif Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Yahya Hussin, who is also the Agriculture and Food Industry Minister, made this call during a visit to Kampung Tebongon to attend a ceremony with 20 disabled people yesterday.

“I hope everyone here will go out to vote and vote for BN when the government is dissolved and the next general election is announced,” he said.

He added that the present government had provided various amenities for the people, one of which was the establishment of the ‘Rehabilitation within the community’ (PDK) which focuses on disabled folks within a community.

“The government not only focuses on people who are healthy but on all levels of the community, from the young to the old, to those with families as well as those who are still single,” he said.

“If we want this to continue, then we have to continue to support BN. Don’t give any face to the opposition. And if they come here, don’t attend any of their events,” he said.

In his speech, Yahya also spoke about helping each other and cooperate within a community.

“This is part of our culture, our way of living,” said Yahya.

He also said the community stands to benefit when there is a spirit of cooperation and helpfulness among its members.

“And today, we are all gathered here to clean our surau and community centre … through such a spirit, we can strengthen our community, but if we lose this willingness of wanting to work hand-in-hand with each other, our community will collapse,” he said.

At the same time, Yahya added that he would be asking the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) to conduct river deepening works on Sungai Tebongon near here.

“The river has to be deepened, there is no doubt about that. I will ask DID to assist in the matter,” he said following a request made by a community head.

There was a request for more chairs for the community centre and Yahya said that he would approve the request immediately.

However, he urged members of the community who borrowed the chairs for events such as weddings and parties to return them to the centre.

“It is very easy for us to borrow but difficult for us to return what we have borrowed,” he chided.

On a request for a set of kompang and the kulintangan musical instruments, Yahya said the community should establish its cultural association which would be responsible for looking after the instruments.

“These instruments are expensive and need to be properly looked after,” he said.
