PETALING JAYA: The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) only recognises Taekwondo Malaysia (TM) as the valid governing body of taekwondo in Malaysia, said WTF president Dr Chungwon Choue.

He said TM was a relevant body to spearhead taekwondo as they had been fully recommended by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and also the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM).

“I’m confident under the leadership of (Tan Sri) Tunku Imran (Tuanku Ja’afar) as TM president, taekwondo in Malaysia will continue to flourish,” he said in his speech at a dinner held in conjunction with his visit to Malaysia yesterday.

While here, Dr Chungwon, who arrived here on Friday, would keep up with the development of Malaysian taekwondo before departing to Korea yesterday.

Also present at the function was Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek, Tunku Imran and Korea’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Yong Joon Lee.

Prior to this, Tunku Imran had said that the Malaysian Taekwondo Association (MTA), an association claiming to be the official governing body, was deregistered by the ministry two years ago and since then TM had taken over the responsibility of developing and organising taekwondo events in the country.

MTA then appealed against the decision to the Minister of Youth and Sports pursuant to the Sports Development Act 1997. The Minister, however, upheld the decision made by the Sports Commissioner. — Bernama

In July 2010, MTA through its former president Raja Taharudin Raja Nong Chik and former vice president Nur Ekmal Buhary, filed a judicial review application seeking the certiorari orders to quash both the Minister and Sports Commissioner’s decisions to ban the MTA.

On April 4 last year, High Court Judge Datuk Rohana Yusof decided to allow MTA’s judicial review application of the ban and granted orders for certiorari in regard to the case. — Bernama
