KUALA LUMPUR: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday received a courtesy call from Myanmar Armed Forces chief Min Aung Hlaing at the ministry, here.

The visit, according Ahmad Zahid, was the first time a Myanmar Armed Forces chief visited the country in nearly 40 years.

“Even though this is the first time, we have been renewing ties that have long existed through training programmes of military officers in our colleges,” he told reporters after the
visit.

He also said the visit symbolised a good beginning as in 2015, when the whole of Myanmar would be changing, it would provide a new environment in the military diplomacy between the two countries.

“It would further open up areas of cooperation between the two countries as we are confident of making Malaysia as a hub for Asean countries with products and assets manufactured in Malaysia,” he said.

He said Myanmar had also confirmed participating in the Langkawi International Maritime and Air exhibition 2013 (Lima 2013) from March 26 to 30 by sending a naval ship. — Bernama
