Snatcher gets 12 years, five strokes

KOTA KINABALU: A local man would be spending 12 years behind bars and given five strokes of the cane for snatching a woman’s pouch last year.

Judge Duncan Sikodol convicted Hassan Rahman under Section 392 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years and a fine.

The accused was found guilty of snatching the woman’s pouch at a lodge in Gaya Street here on December 10, 2012.

Deputy public prosecutor (DPP) Monica Linsua called five witnesses to testify against Hassan, who was not defended.

In a separate case, a local man, Issam Bakri, 33, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for robbing a woman of a sling bag containing a MyKad, bank and credit cards, driving licence, a wrist watch, an iPhone, a pair of glasses, a seal bearing a company’s name and RM4,000 in cash at a car park near a supermarket area here at 9pm on July 18, 2012.

The accused changed his plea of not guilty to one of guilty before judge Ismail Brahim after the prosecution called one witness to testify. DPP Nartiah F Mirchelle Sambatan prosecuted.

Meanwhile, another local, Zakriah Myung Kyu Yu, 29, received four years’ jail and ordered to be whipped once for a robbery attempt.

Judge Caroline Bee Majanil passed the sentence after Zakriah pleaded guilty to causing hurt to a 51-year-old man while robbing him in Jalan Pantai here on November 12, 2011.

He was charged under Section 394 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum 20 years’ jail and also liable to whipping.

DPP Afzan Abd Kahar appeared for the prosecution.
