PENAMPANG: A total of 1,608 schools will be repaired this year, Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said Thursday.

He said the schools were among 10,380 schools identified by the ministry’s Physical Audit Committee nationwide as being in a very poor state and most of them were in Sabah and Sarawak.

“We want to focus on these schools to ensure students are able to study in comfort and to facilitate the teaching process by teachers.

“The repair works will be conducted on classrooms, teachers’ quarters and wiring at school buildings,” he told reporters after the handing over of new buildings for Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Buayan near here today.

In another development, Mohd Puad said the contractor appointed to install the 1BestariNet towers in schools nationwide, including in the interiors of Sabah and Sarawak, were required to get the job done by March this year.

“This is to enable students to enjoy internet facility at a speed of four to 10 megabyte per second,” he added.

Mohd Puad also visited SK Terian which would be getting six new classrooms, two houses for teachers and a new canteen.

Work on the project would begin early next month and scheduled to be completed in five weeks, he added. — Bernama
