KOTA MARUDU: A total of 549 families from 14 flood-hit villages in Kota Marudu have been evacuated to relief centres since Saturday.

Kota Marudu member of parliament Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Maximus Ongkili said all systems and standard operating procedures have been put in place with relevant departments and agencies giving full cooperation and support to mitigate the situation and provide assistance, relief and aid to those affected.

Dr Ongkili, who is also Science, Technology and Innovation Minister, visited the operations room at the district office yesterday for a briefing and later visited the shelters where aid, including food, was distributed.

He advised everyone to be vigilant and in a state of preparedness as rain, although less heavy, is still occurring in the constituency.

“We must take precaution and be on the alert to ensure the safety of the public at affected areas,” he said.

Ongkili said the basic needs of the 1,851 people from the 549 families evacuated had been met with shelter and basic supplies provided.
