MIRI: A jobless man apprehended on suspicion of snatching a bag belonging to a woman was ordered to be remanded for four days to facilitate police investigation.

In the magistrate’s court here yesterday, Senior Assistant Registrar Mohamad Redza Azhar Rezali approved the application for remand by prosecuting officer, Inspector Mansur Rahman from the Central Police Station here.

In his application, Mansur told the court that last Dec 29, a woman lodged a report at Lutong Police Station.

She claimed that while waiting for a bus at Lorong 4-3, Permyjaya at 5.40pm on the same day, a man emerged from nowhere to snatch her handbag before fleeing.

Her handbag contained RM750, a Mykad, a mobile phone and a bank book.

Acting on information received at the premises of the Central Police Station here around 2.20pm on Jan 21, a police party apprehended a youth on suspicion of being involved in the case.

Mansur said the four-day remand of the 17-year-old suspect from Permyjaya under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code was for police to carry out a thorough investigation into the case.

“Besides, we need more time to trace the item and record his cautioned statement, hence his release may jeopardise the investigation,” he explained.

The court granted the application and instructed the suspect to be produced in the same court room for mention on Jan 26.
