MIRI: The `Fun In The English Language Classroom’ workshop held recently over the weekend at the Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club in Lopeng here was indeed a fun-filled event.

Forty-six English language teachers from Miri Division attended the event, jointly organised by the Miri Divisional Education Office and Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang College, Miri.

It was aimed at teaching English the fun way using Information Communication Technology (ICT) and other tools of the 21st century.

Among others, the participants were exposed to ‘Tools For Flipped Classrooms’, `Gamifications Of Classroom Learning’, `Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)’, `Solving Brain Teasers By The Bar Codes’ and the use of songs and dramatisation in teaching the language.

They were also exposed to the many online programmes and web technologies in English language teaching.

Facilitator Nor Fadzleen Sa’don from Johor Bharu spent the whole Saturday with the enthusiastic and highly motivated teachers.

Nor Fadzleen is a master teacher as well as a blogger, writer of several books and an award winner of Malaysian English
Language Teaching Association (Melta).

Earlier in his welcoming speech, Rakin Sebastian represented the Miri divisional education officer to officiate at the opening ceremony of the workshop.

He expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang College for the initiative and commitment in making the event a great success.

“A meaningful move and beneficial too,” he said.

Rakin hoped the participants would put into practice what they had learned and acquired to make the language alive, fun and interesting.

Meanwhile, the workshop was one of the college’s English Panel community projects under the Cluster School of Excellence programme.

Following the success, the organisers are considering holding a similar one in future.
