Young guard killed in fiery crash

KOTA KINABALU: A young security guard who was on his way to work was killed when a pickup truck rammed into his motorcycle at Km 14.3, Tuaran Bypass here on Saturday.

Md Razif Md Sabtu, 22, from Felda Sahabat 2, Lahad Datu, succumbed to serious head and body injuries in the 7.30pm incident.

The victim was on his way to work in Menggatal when a white pickup truck that was heading towards the city centre, made a U-turn back to Menggatal and rammed into the victim’s Yamaha RXZ motorcycle.

The victim was flung a couple of metres from his motorcycle which burst into flames.

The driver of the pickup truck fled the scene as passerby called the Fire and Rescue Service Department and police for assistance.

Firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after and put out the fire from the motorcycle as traffic police controlled the traffic flow.

The victim’s wife, in her 20s, arrived at the scene about half an hour later and was seen grieving inconsolably over the death of her husband.

City police chief ACP Jauteh Dikun, who confirmed the incident, said police were still carrying out investigation to identify the white pickup truck and the driver.

“The case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said, and is urging eyewitness of the accident to come forward to assist police in their investigation.
