KAPIT: DAP yesterday announced that mechanical engineer Ramli Malaka is their pick for Kapit in the fast-approaching 13th general election.

Malaka is from Katibas and currently works as a project manager of Winstep Sdn Bhd in Bintulu.

His candidacy was unveiled by DAP Dayak Consultative Committee chairman Dr John Bryan Anthony at press conference here.

Also present were Kidurong assemblyman Chew Chin Sing and Oscar Ling – special assistant to Sibu MP Wong Ho Leng.

Anthony said DAP’s presence here was part of its effort to strengthen its multiracial make-up.

“Fifty per cent of our candidates for the coming general election will be in predominantly Dayak constituencies in the rural areas. The remaining 50 per cent will be in Chinese majority areas in urban centres,” he said.

“DAP will be contesting in Kapit, Bintulu, Mas Gading, Serian, Mukah and Lawas (for rural constituencies) and Bandar Kuching, Stampin, Sarikei, Sibu, Lanang and Miri (urban constituencies).”

He added that the DAP believed it could help develop Kapit which had been lagging in the backwaters although the state achieved its independence through the formation of Malaysia 50 years ago.

Anthony claimed that the natives here had complained to the party about NCR lands issues and how their cries for help had fallen on deaf ears all these years.
