ITU approves the H.265 video format

Formerly known as the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), the H.265 encoding format promises similar video quality of 1080p at almost half the bitrate (thus size). That’s a big promise to deliver, and if it is indeed realized, will be a good news to all of us in all field.

Don’t expect to see videos with H.265 to appear so soon though, as software and hardware support are still scarce. And without big hardware brands (like Apple) support it natively, the codec would not become popular for most encoders too.

TechCrunch predicted that software encoders will only appear end of 2013, while hardware support will be even further ahead. Stay tuned for more info.
