DRIVE CAREFULLY: That stretch of Lundu-Sempadi Rod is now passable to traffic.

KUCHING: A road diversion at the stretch of Lundu-Sempadi road affected by the recent landslide has been completed and the road is now opened to traffic.

According to a press statement from PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, the diversion work was completed on Jan 24 to provide an element of safety and eases the traffic flow.

The CEO of PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd Construction and Road Maintenance Division, Lim Jit Yaw, said their teams were immediately mobilised to the scene on Jan 22 after receiving the land slippage report around 9pm.

“We immediately moved to stabilise the area, erect safety signs and safety barriers to warn motorists of the hazard.”

He also said that although the road was not built by PPES Works their contract was for routine maintenance work.

Lim also said that they had been working closely with Public Works Department to create a diversion route before any official written request was even made.

“Unfortunately, Sarawak is still encountering heavy rains which will make any assessment of the slippage impossible,” he added.

He said that any accurate assessments and plans to reconstruct the road could be done only after the rain had subsided and the land settled.

While the affected stretch of Jalan Lundu-Sempadi is now passable to single lane traffic, PPES Works recommends motorists to observe cautionary measures.

Over the past few weeks, Sarawak has been battling torrential rains and high tides which have caused havoc on the roads.

On Jan 11 and 12, CMS Roads Sdn Bhd leapt into action, to answer the call of duty in helping stranded motorists caught in a flash flood at the Tanjung Kidurong-Suai-Bakam coastal road.
