LAHAD DATU: A primary school student was knocked down and crushed to death under a trailer truck’s wheel at Simpang Limbungan Sepanggar Shipyard, Jalan Pelabuhan here, yesterday.
Syarif Junior Langbas Julhussin, 8, was walking to school when the incident occurred about 10.45am.
District police chief Superintendent Shamsudin Mat said the incident happened due to the carelessness of the trailer truck driver who was unaware of the victim’s presence.
“Initial investigation found that the trailer truck knocked down the victim while reversing his vehicle to tow a damaged lorry at the area. It is possible that the driver was unaware of the victim standing behind his trailer,” he said.
Shamsudin said the victim was trapped under the truck’s wheels and firefighters had to be called to extricate the victim’s body which was was later sent to Lahad Datu Hospital for a post-mortem.
He said investigation was ongoing and the trailer truck driver was now in their custody to assist in investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
